Clinical Context

There is
tremendous interest in the use of omega-3 fatty acids to prevent cardiovascular
disease, but a previous study of the full cohort from the Alpha Omega Trial did
not provide encouraging results. Their results, which were published in the
November 18, 2010, issue of The New
England Journal of Medicine
, demonstrated that neither
the combination of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
nor the plant-derived α-linolenic
acid (ALA) were effective in the prevention of major cardiovascular events
among patients with a previous myocardial infarction.

Patients with both diabetes mellitus and a
previous myocardial infarction are at particularly high risk for recurrent
cardiovascular events. The current study by Kromhout and colleagues evaluates
this subgroup of patients from the Alpha Omega Trial
